AN infection prevention nurse is urging residents to remember the importance of washing their hands to stop spreading germs.

As the flu bug continues to make people feel poorly, she says those who don’t wash their hands properly run the risk of spreading illnesses of spreading germs.

Emma Sneed, Infection Prevention Nurse at the county’s three doctor-led clinical commissioning groups, said: “Washing your hands regularly and thoroughly is one of the best ways of preventing the spread of bacteria, viruses and the illnesses they can cause.

“Hands should be washed after using the toilet, when handling raw foods like chicken, meat and vegetables, before eating and having contact with pets.

“It’s especially important to make sure hands are washed when you’re visiting someone in hospital to help prevent the spread of infection.”

She said using soap and water means people can reduce their risk of contacting diarrhoea by nearly 50 per cent and respiratory infections by nearly 25 per cent.
