Bromsgrove District Council offers residents the chance to cut funeral costs

PEOPLE in Bromsgrove can save cash on their funeral costs by taking up an offer from the district council.

It follows an £293,000 investment by the authority to expand the North Bromsgrove Cemetery on Barley Mow Lane, providing a number of limited plots which can be bought in advance.

The graves, within the existing mature section of the cemetery, are on 75-year leases and include rights to put up memorials.

Coun Margaret Sherry, Bromsgrove District Council’s portfolio holder for Health and Well Being and Environmental Services, said buying a burial plot was increasingly difficult, or even impossible in some parts of the country, due to a lack of available burial space.

She added it was a concern for many people but Bromsgrove had bucked the national trend by expanding its burial space.

Mike Birkinshaw, Bromsgrove District Council’s Bereavement Services Manager, added: “We now have about 80 years’ worth of space, and being able to offer reserve graves will help us to help people plan for the ever rising costs of funerals.”
