CATSHILL Methodist Church Centre has decided to sell peace-promoting white poppies as well as red ones to represent all victims of war, writes Demi Andrews.
Although less recognised than the red poppy, the white poppy was introduced in 1933 to show commitment to peace and a challenge to attempts to glamorise or celebrate war.
The minister of Catshill Methodist Church Centre, Rev Anne Smith, said: “It is both right and proper to remember all those who have given their lives for this country, but remembering only the past is to ignore the future and we need to commit ourselves to peaceful resolutions to conflict.”
Both red and white poppies are available from the church centre and a service including prayers for peace will be held at 6pm on Sunday, November 11.
