MEMBERS of Catshill WI gathered at the village hall in Golden Cross Lane last night to celebrate the group’s 50th birthday.

There was musical entertainment, a buffet and a special ‘Catshill 50’ cake, along with a visit from Worcestershire WIs advisor Christine Hickman-Smith.

The group was launched on the September 9, 1968, and has been meeting on the second Monday of the month ever since.

It has competitions and guest speakers and is big on its craft work and raises funds for local charities.

Last year it chose the Bromsgrove Foodbank, collecting cash and buying items to boost its stocks.

Member numbers have varied and it currently has 20 but, president Mary N Davies said, it is always on the lookout for more new faces.

The longest-standing member Cynthia Caldicott who has been with the group for more than 30 years, said: “It’s always been a very friendly and happy group.

“We have had some wonderful days out over the years, including a visit to the London Eye when it opened and a trip to the O2.

“We also have some fantastic craft days.”

Christine, who is busy preparing the centenary of the Worcestershire WIs group which is also this year, said: “It’s lovely to see Catshill WI thriving after 50 years.

“We look forward to the next 50.”

At the next meeting, on the second Monday in October (7.30pm for a 7.45pm start) Cynthia will be giving a cookery demonstration entitled ‘Getting ready for Christmas’.
