Harlequins' Singing in the Rain has crowd laughing and foot-tapping along

HARLEQUINS’ youth production of Singing in the Rain was short and sweet theatre that had the audience toe-tapping and chuckling throughout.

You could see the talented young cast loved being on the stage and the crowd enjoyed it just as much.

Josh Allwood was a sound Cosmo Brown and got his fair share of the laughs and Jack Clements was a dynamic Don Lockwood.

The audience took him to their hearts and the rendition of the title number – Singing in the Rain – was the stand-out moment of the production.

It was beautifully choreographed with the striking red umbrellas and him splashing through the puddles and swinging on the lamp post during the ‘real rain’ sequence gave the show the ‘wow’ factor.

The best vocally was Ellen-May Evans as Kathy Selden, especially during her solo in All I Dream of You.

But the star of the show by far was Lauren Donaghy as Lina.

She had those watching in hysterics from the moment she walked onto the stage with her dulcet American tones and flamboyant personality.

When the audience wasn’t laughing at her antics it was applauding her. You wonder when you watch how she managed to keep up such an over-the-top voice for the whole show and your vocal chords are twinging as you think about it.

This is feel good theatre at its best and you leave the auditorium with Singing in the Rain in your head and any storm clouds lifted from your shoulders.

The remaining shows take place at the Palace Theatre tomorrow and Friday and, whatever the weather, it’s well worth a watch.
