South Birmingham Flying Club's Fun Fly-In at Cofton Park hailed a success

THE SOUTH Birmingham Model Flying Club’s first open day of the year, held at Cofton Park, was a huge success, writes Esther Payne.

The event on April 8, saw a wide range of people attend with new models they had built over the winter.

Birmingham City Council does not permit untethered powered models to fly in the area so the club used controlled line flying for its model aircraft.

One flyer, John Alcock, was testing prototype British model diesel engines in preparation for a contest at the beginning of May.

He said they showed a lot of potential.

A spokesperson for the club said: “We encouraged some of the visiting young flyers to have a go with a specialist trainer model, this was generally successful, with the youngsters hugely enjoying this experience.”

The calm weather meant a lot of successful flights took place during the day.

The next event will be on September 16, also at Cofton Park.
