Worcester's cultural Helme Family to be the subject at the next meeting of Bromsgrove's Midlands Ancestors branch

THE NEXT meeting of the Bromsgrove branch of Midland Ancestors will take place at 7.45pm on Tuesday, April 10.

The presentation on The Helme Family of Worcester will be given by Madeline Goold.

The Helme family were cultural catalysts in the city for 80 years from the 1790s, operating a dance academy in College Yard.

They brought musical and social refinement to the city throughout that period.

This talk is not on the family history but a study of the family’s musical and cultural activities and its influence in Worcester and the county.

She will detail the musical life of Sarah Helme, the daughter of the dancing master, looking at her records as a provincial teacher and agent for Broadwood

Pianos. She was one of the first genteel women to earn her independence in this way.

The event takes place at Bromsgrove Methodist Centre.
