Police launch operation after dramatic rise in phone scams where callers claiming to be police officers steal cash and cards from the elderly

A SPECIAL operation has been launched by West Mercia Police after a massive increase in the number of frauds where bogus callers are posing as police officers or other officials to get their hands on elderly people’s cash and cash cards.

Operation Prospero began after incidents in Bromsgrove, Redditch and other areas in the county, including five incidents on Wednesday and more yesterday.

Police fear many others are going unreported so the full extent of the scam is unknown.

Officers want to remind people the police, banks and other organisations will never ask anyone to hand over bank cards or leave money or cards to be collected.

Anyone who has fallen victim to the scam should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
