As the Met Office issues a yellow warning for snow and ice, Worcestershire County Council says it is 'ready for the winter weather'

WORCESTERSHIRE County Council has said it is ready for any winter weather that the ‘Beast from the East’ throws at the area.

The authority has said it has 7,000 tonnes of salt at its depots and the gritters will be out and about throughout the week to cover the roads as the cold weather continues.

Around 5,000 tonnes of salt is also kept in reserves to ensure there is enough to go around.

Jon Fraser, from Worcestershire Highways, said: “The gritters were out yesterday evening spreading salt on the county’s roads and they will be heading out again this evening.

“However, people just need to be careful when they are driving on the roads as we’re expecting very low temperatures and snowfall.”

The salt/grit mixture is for use on the roads and footpaths and can be used by members of the public when temperatures drop below zero Celsius to help drivers and pedestrians.

An interactive map, which allows users to search via postcode for their nearest grit bin can be found at www.worcestershire.gov.uk/gritting

Residents wanting to request a refill of a grit bin during the winter season log on to the County Council’s ‘Report It’ system at www.worcestershire.gov.uk/reportit.
