AN OVERWEIGHT Bromsgrove dog who was crippled with arthritis has turned his life around, shedding almost 10kg, with the help of a town vets.
Busta Bruce, an eight-year-old black labrador, weighed 46kg when he started his special weight loss programme at Clent Hill Vets.
His size had caused him numerous problems, including painful arthritis in his front legs and fatty lumps which were affecting his health.
Had they continued to grow he would have required surgery so desperate owner Clare Bruce took him to the Doggy Weight Watchers sessions held every four weeks from March until September at Clent Hill Vets.
Under the guidance of head vet Alun Edwards and the team of practice nurses, Busta received a tailor-made weight-loss plan involving a special diet and exercise regime.
Now seven months on, having lost 8.3kg, Busta is now pain-free and drug-free and enjoying a far more active lifestyle.
Alun Edwards said: “Labrador obesity has made the national headlines recently following research undertaken by scientists at the University of Cambridge.
“A study into the appetite of Britain’s favourite dog breed suggested Labradors are not just typically greedy but are genetically at risk of becoming overweight. “Research supported by the Dogs’ Trust identified a gene mutation responsible for increasing the appetite of Labradors.”
He added the vets was working hard to tackle canine obesity to ensure pets led a healthier and happier life.
Clare said: “Busta always seemed hungry and I fed him because I couldn’t bear to think he wasn’t eating enough.
“The expert help on offer at Clent Hils Vets has enabled me to help Busta on his weight loss journey.
“It’s amazing to see what a difference it has made to both our lives.”
