A BARNT Green author has been nominated for a prestigious national literary award.

Steve Dunn, who lives in Fiery Hill Drive, is in the running for the 2017 Mountbatten Maritime Award for his latest book ‘Securing the Narrow Sea’.

The accolade is part of the Maritime Media Awards, launched in 1995 by the Maritime Foundation, to honour writers and film makers whose work deepens public understanding of Britain’s dependence on the sea.

‘Securing the Narrow Sea’ tells the story of the men of the Dover Patrol, who battled to keep control of the English Channel during the First World War.

Their stories are particularly poignant because the patrol was made up of an increasing number of volunteers, yachtsmen, fishermen, merchant sailors and ordinary citizens, a total of 2,000 lost their lives during the four-year battle.

“It’s a real honour to be nominated for the Best Literary Contribution as this is a tough category, with some outstanding writers,” said Steve, who specialises in First World War Naval history.

“I’m obviously passionate about my subject but it’s great to get official recognition and acknowledgement that my book is making an impact and helping to turn the spotlight on maritime issues.”

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Institute of Directors in London on November 8.
