New campaign launched today to combat drivers using their hand-held mobile phones at the wheel

WEST MERCIA and Warwickshire Police are urging motorists to avoid deadly distractions at the wheel by taking part in a new campaign being launched today (Monday).

The drive, which runs until Sunday, July 16, is aimed at those who use their mobile phones while driving, continually flouting the laws in place to protect road users and pedestrians.

The mobile phone enforcement and education campaign is taking place across the UK and reminds motorists of the increased penalties introduced earlier this year for those caught driving while using a hand-held phone.

Both the fine and penalty doubled from £100 to £200 and from three points to six.

The police say it is potentially fatal and has been illegal since December 2003 and, despite the warnings, some drivers believe it is still acceptable.

A newly qualified driver could lose their licence if caught within two years of passing their test.

Studies show drivers are slower at recognising and reacting to hazards when using a hand-held mobile. Calls and texts can be distracting and a split second could result in collisions.

Ch Supt Stephen Cullen from West Mercia and Warwickshire Police said “Improving the safety of our roads is a year-round commitment for our officers.

“Although mobile phone enforcement is already part of our daily operational activity, we will be stepping up our efforts over this week to crack down on motorists who are blatantly ignoring both the law and dangers.”
