Youngsters from Winterfold House School enlightened by 'lifetime opportunity' trip to South Africa

PUPILS from Winterfold House School embarked on a trip to South Africa, writes Cameron Hill.

The journey began with a tour of Langa Township to show the children the extreme poverty occurring in Cape Town.

The girls competed in a netball tournament, while the boys played rugby with a twist – it was barefoot.

This was followed by an educational trip to Robben Island, where they were taught about the life of Nelson Mandela.

The journey was filled with memorable moments such as surfing lessons in Durban, watching a Sharks vs Melbourne rugby game, and visiting a nature reserve where the wildlife is a bit different to the birds and squirrels which populate Worcestershire.

The tour concluded with a visit to Ncemaneni School – one which Winterfold has been donating money to as part of a scheme to help those in poverty.

The money raised by pupils, parents and sponsors has paid for a brand new science lab.

One pupil said: “My visit to Ncemaneni has really changed my outlook on life.

“I understand how lucky I am and won’t take things for granted anymore.”
