AN AWARD-WINNING swim school which holds lessons in Barnt Green is providing compulsory deaf awareness training to all of its swimming teachers.
Puddle Ducks Worcestershire has partnered the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) to provide the training to all of its swimming teachers, with 300 already completing the course.
The decision comes after research by the NDCS found 40 per cent of deaf children have difficulty accessing swimming opportunities.
And it comes just before the start of Deaf Awareness Week which runs Monday (May 15) to next Sunday (May 21).
Ashleigh Scott, NDS’ swimming development officer, said: “Unfortunately too many deaf children are currently being denied the opportunity to learn to swim, as some swimming providers don’t understand their needs.
“We know these barriers can be overcome.
“By making small changes to swimming lessons, teachers and coaches can ensure young deaf people are fully included.
“We’re delighted to support Puddle Ducks’ positive approach ensuring inclusion for young deaf people.”

She added deaf awareness training was provided for all its teachers and many had learnt basic sign language to communicate effectively with all children in their classes.
