MORE than 1,300 people visited Bromsgrove’s Avoncroft Museum on Monday (May 1) for some traditional May Day celebrations.

Despite some intermittent rain in the morning, the venue was close to capacity as the crowds watched Maypole and Morris dancing displays from the Old Meg group.

Monty the Jester was on hand to talk visitors young and old through a host of circus skills, including plate spinning, hula-hooping and unicycle riding.

There were re-enactors in the Toll House and Tudor House, the historic windmill was open for people to look around and there were fairground rides, pony rides and archery.

Another of the attractions which went down well with younger visitors was the wash room where people could clean and dry garments the old fashioned way with a washboard, dolly tub, mangle and clothes horse.

Lucy Lewis, Avoncroft Museum’s head of engagement, said: “The rain did not seem to bother the visitors at all and the feedback we have had about the day has been very positive.

“Everyone we spoke to said they had an amazing time.”
