A NEW book entitled ‘The History of Rubery’ was launched at village cafe Polly Put the Kettle On last Friday (March 31).

Author Deryk Whitfield was at the venue to talk about his creation and sign copies for residents.

As well as people who live in Rubery, others who had left the village returned for the launch.

Polly Put the Kettle On owner Susan O’Leary said: “The toasted teacakes were plentiful and people were chatting to each other, creating a lovely atmosphere.”

By the end, Deryk, who had to practice his signature on the first sale as this was his first book, had signed and sold more than 50.

More of the books are still available at Polly’s for £10 each.

They feature lots of history and pictures of old school classes and images of Rubery and the surrounding areas.

Bill Buzby who helped with some of the information and photos in the book was also to hand to answer questions.

“He is a great character and a regular customer at Polly’s – we love to chat about days gone by,” added Susan.
