Bromsgrove caregivers make cushions for clients living with dementia

CAREGIVERS from Bromsgrove and Redditch have been making twiddle muffs and fiddle cushions for their clients who are living with dementia.

The hand-made crafts have been created by those from Home Instead Senior Care who will be handing them out in time for Christmas.

Hazel Howells, from Home Instead, came up with the idea of holding a workshop for caregivers who made as many as possible.

The items have interesting bits and bobs attached which people with Alzheimer’s, arthritis and dementia find comforting and therapeutic as they encourage movement and brain stimulation.

Hazel said she had the idea when her daughter went with her on a visit one of her clients with dementia.

“She brought with her a coloured clown toy, covered in buttons and tassels, which the clients loved.

“I saw how much stimulation and security the toy provided to my clients and got the idea of making my own twiddle muffs and cushions to help provide that same stimulation they got with the toy.”

She added she was delighted the company was holding more workshops, adding the clients would be delighted to receive one for Christmas.

And she said she wanted as many people as possible to find out how to make them too with new knitting sessions being planned for the public.
