DAN PROTHEROUGH is calling on his Bromsgrove players to show more execution in the final third ahead of their return to National 3 South West action this weekend.
The Boars welcome Bristol-based Old Redcliffians to Finstall Park on Saturday with the hope of picking up just their second victory of the campaign since the level transfer from National 3 Midlands.
Redcliffians sit second in the table and inflicted a first defeat of the season on league leaders Cambourne two weeks ago and Boars’ director of rugby Protherough is expecting a difficult encounter.
He said: “We have played well against the top sides so far but I think we need to show a little more execution in the final third and turn pressure into valuable points.
“A few times this season we have only been behind by four points and that has cost us results so I think we need to finish games a little bit better.
“Redcliffians beat the league leaders a fortnight ago so it’s certainly going to be a tough game but we have started brightly in our last few games so hopefully we can get off to another good start.”
Protherough’s men go into their clash against Old Redclilffians on the back of a 72-8 defeat to Midlands One West outfit Bournville in the RFU North Midlands Cup.
The Boars boss made 12 changes to the squad and including several of the club’s up-and-coming talent.
And having lead 5-3 early doors, they conceded converted tries either side of the break which brought an end to the contest.
Despite the heavy defeat which saw Charles Baffour-Awuah and Jamie Atkin score unconverted tries, Protherough said there was plenty of positives to take from the game.
“Bournville were at pretty much full strength whereas we had a squad filled with youngsters which made a difference,” he added.
“The cup game gave me a chance to rest some of the players with niggling injuries as well as allowing some of the youngster to taste senior rugby.
“The younger lads got the chance to experience the levels required to play at National Three level so it will put them in good stead for the future.”
Ahead of Saturday’s clash against Old Redcliffians, Protherough will be without Tom Hardwick (back) and Sam Bastock (groin) while Paul Norris (shoulder) is a doubt.
