AFTER rocking crowds at this year’s Lakefest, Bromsgrove boys Harry Hudson and Matt Owen – aka Before She Calls, are gearing up for the big time. We spoke to them ahead of the launch of new EP, 0SEVEN9.
Q: Congratulations on the launch – tell us about the new EP.
Matt: Thanks. The sound came naturally, and while it’s unique to us, we didn’t feel the need to be pigeon holed into strictly one style.
Harry: It centres around experiences with women really and takes its name from the title track ‘0SEVEN9’, referring to a phone number – that I never got…
Q: How did the name of the band come about?
Harry: Matt’s girlfriend was going to call him to pick her up from work so we were working against the clock and he said, ‘right, we have to come up with a name before she calls…’
Q: What do you love most about each other’s creative talents?
Harry: The main thing above everything else is we just click.
Matt: Harry works away so when we do have time to produce, the work rate is insanely high and we get a tonne of stuff done because we’re just always on the same wave-length.
Q: Great to see you putting Bromsgrove on the musical map. What are your thoughts on the local scene?
Harry: Well, the unsigned scene around here is really strong and collaborating with people is something we love to do. Its great to have a such a wealth of talent to work with and hopefully push the local scene forward as a team.
Matt: We’ll be collaborating with local artists such as Ben Stancomb, Candy and Seb Tree in 2017.
Q: What’s the highlight so far?
Harry: It has to be performing on the BBC Introducing stage at Lakefest where we got a great reception.
Matt: Highlight number two will hopefully be getting a similar reception on November 21 when the EP comes out. Fingers crossed…
Q: What do you do when not making music?
Harry: Matt runs an online magazine called ‘The Music Spot’ where he promotes and interviews other artists – and I work in the army.
Q: Who would you love to collaborate with most?
Harry: Wretch 32 is a personal favourite. Looking further afield, Drake would top the overseas wishlist.
Q: What’s your advice to other up and coming artists?
Harry: I’m not sure we’re in a position to give advice to other up and coming artists quite yet, but our mantra is stay positive and stay busy.
Matt: Enjoy what you do and keep putting it out there.
