FUND-RAISERS collecting cash in memory of a brave Bromsgrove boy who lost his battle with cancer have now amassed a total of £9,000 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Seven-year old Ben Hooper’s courageous fight against the illness began when he was just two years old, and continued until he tragically passed away at the age of seven on April 4 this year.
More than 150 people turned up to his funeral at Christ Church in Lichfield, raising £8,000, which was donated to the Oncology unit where Ben was treated.
A further £1,081 was raised when 14 staff and members of Bromsgrove gym Altered Images took part in a two-hour ‘aquathon’ in July.
Ben’s grandmother Pauline Hooper said she and her family were overwhelmed by the support they received and were especially grateful to staff and and members at Altered Images.
She added: “The aquathon was a fun way to raise money for the Oncology Unit, which took such good care of Ben when he was so poorly.”
A cheque for the amount was presented to Birmingham Children’s Hospital in honour of Ben on September 12.
Team member Racheal Watson who helped arrange the fundraiser told the Standard: “Pauline is a long-standing member of the gym, and we have quite a close-knit community here, everyone knows each other well, so we knew what was going on with Ben and so we really wanted to do something to help in any way we could.”
