POLICE are cracking down on drink-driving this summer after statistics showed 58 people died in Worcestershire in the last three years as a result of motorists being under the influence.
Research by the Safer Roads Partnership showed there was a significant increase in the number of people mixing drink or drugs with driving, a particular worry as the European Football 2016 kicked off.
Vicki Bristow, communications manager for the Safer Roads Partnership, said: “During the summer months most of us like to enjoy the longer evenings but this often puts people in situations where they may be drinking more than usual, such as when watching the football.
“Our campaign aims to highlight the fact mixing drinking and driving simply isn’t worth the risk.
“Our message is very simple – if you’re driving, don’t drink any alcohol at all.
“Alcohol affects everyone very differently and any amount can impair your ability to drive.
“The only safe option is to avoid alcohol completely if you are driving, as even ‘just one drink’ could put you over the limit.”
Officers are reminding residents if caught drink driving they will be banned for 12 months and may face six months in prison along with a possible £5,000 and criminal record.
