KIND-HEARTED Bromsgrove residents will be meeting up at St Andrew’s Parish Hall in Barnt Green from 9.30am to 4pm next Saturday (June 4) for a day of workshops and training as the town prepares to welcome a small number of refugees.

The Getting Ready for Worcestershire Refugees event has been organised by the Bromsgrove and Redditch Welcomes Refugees Committee.

Five Syrian families are due to arrive in Redditch next month. BRWR organisers are inviting all residents who are interested in welcoming them, to this day of training.

The day will include a panel discussion chaired by John Cochrane and which will include representatives from Refugee Action, Bromsgrove District Council, the Malvern Welcome Refugees group and the BRWR.

The BRWR has over 200 supporters and is bringing together speakers from organisations which will be working together to ensure the five refugee families coming to Redditch this year will positively integrate.

Speakers include director of the Institute for Superdiversity at Birmingham University Jenny Phillimore, national resettlement manager at Refugee Action Julie Kashirahamwe (the charity which will be overseeing the settlement process in Worcestershire) – and Derek Allen, Bromsgrove strategic housing manager.

The morning sessions on the day will be devoted to information giving and sharing while the afternoon will offer a choice of workshops including how to fund-raise, generate awareness and becoming a friend or buddy to the new arrivals.

Residents of Bromsgrove and Redditch are invited to book their places on the training day by sending an email to: [email protected].

A small donation for lunch will also be required.
