MALCOLM BROWN just held off the efforts of Warren Beech to take top spot in the Alvechurch Fisheries Thursday Open in which 12 fished.

Fishing off peg 13, Brown opted to fish long pole and maggot attack over two lines up to the flower box and down the margin to net carp and barbel for a mixed net of 36.12.

Beech, on the next peg 11, fished long pole and maggot up to the rushes over a number of swims for 33.3.

Fishing off peg 24, local schoolboy Owen Smith in his first open contest made it into third place after switching pole and maggot out in front and down the margin to net a few carp and barbel up to 5lb to boost his net to 25.4.

Ron Taylor on peg 30 alternated two tactics – pole and maggot out in front and bomb and maggot up to the rushes – for 22.10 and fourth place.

THE ALVECHURCH Fisheries team was beaten by Black Country Misfits in the first round of the Super Cup in atrocious conditions on Saturday.

The top three all fished pole and maggot tactics out in front and down the margins and following the weigh-in the match ended in three sections each.

As a final result, the Misfits won with a total weight of 197lb to Alvechurch’s 184lb.

Top three: 1st John Newton (Alvechurch, peg 13) – 66.10; 2nd Phil Watts (BCM, peg 24) – 64.6; 3rd Warren Beech (Alvechurch, peg 28) – 51.6.
