Bromsgrove set for promotion

BROMSGROVE Men’s E look set for promotion as champions after claiming maximum points against Worcester F in the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Winter Tennis League.

A 4-0 win for Bromsgrove ensured they opened up a 10-point gap at the top of Division Nine East and even though they mathematically can be caught, the chances of going up look inevitable with only one match remaining.

Leading the way was captain Chris Hands with new partner Bruce Turner with the pair putting on a confident display to win both rubbers in two sets.

The younger duo of George Rogers with Aaron Oakes had a two set win against their opposite pair, before coming from a set down to beat the first Worcester pair.

Captain Hands said: “‘On paper we can be caught but there would have to be some bizarre results for that to happen so I’m really pleased with the win and what looks like promotion as champions.

“The way George and Aaron came back shows how far they have come as match players who can respond well to difficult situations. With such strong juniors coming through the future for the club is looking good.”

Fortunes were not so good for the Mixed C Team as after being promoted as runners-up last season, and pushed up another division following a reshuffle of the league, they are finding the going tough.

The Mixed C team entertained Bewdley in Division Three and slumped to a 4-0 defeat.

Three of the rubbers were close fought three-set battles but the pairs of Cornelia Wedelich with Jeth Tomlinson and Di Inchley with Trevor Errington could not win the decisive points.
