Anger as travellers set up camp in Bromsgrove

TRAVELLERS have set up an illegal encampment on the Charford Recreation Ground, off Lyttleton Avenue.

The group arrived on Thursday night (July 17) and there is now more than 30 vehicles or caravans on the site.

Coun Chris Bloore, who represents the area on Worcestershire County Council, said he had received calls from 50 residents about the situation.

Among the issues raised were the mess created on the site, which will lead to a costly clean-up operation when they are moved on, and a rise in anti-social behaviour, including noise until late at night and abusive language.

“It’s already a mess up there – it’s so depressing.

“The swearing and shouting has led to people not being able to open their windows which is awful in this hot weather.

“Children will also not be able to use the Rec or the play area which, at the start of the school summer holidays, is just not on.

“Charford Rec is so open to this kind of thing – there are no defences against it.

“When this group has been moved on, we are going to have to have some barriers put up to ensure it does not happen again.”

He also said the district would possibly get the order to evict the travellers from the site on Monday (July 21) or Tuesday (July 22) but it could take up to seven days to move them on.

The Standard contacted Bromsgrove District Council and is currently awaiting its response.

On the reports of anti-social behaviour, a West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “Officers are aware of the situation and are monitoring it.”

He added once the district council had the order in place to move the travellers on, the police would be ready to assist.
