FIVE CHILDREN have been chosen as the winners of Bishop’ Hugh’s art competition.
Evie Parkes, Isabelle Stringer, Layla Smith, Harry Andrews and Autumn Faulkner were all invited to afternoon tea in Bishop Hugh’s office. There, they met the bishop and to see where their artwork will be hung.
More than 20 schools entered the competition to create some new artwork for Bishop Hugh’s office. Themes included faith, hope and love.
The winners ranged from reception to year eight and came from several schools, including St John’s Middle School in Bromsgrove.
Bishop Hugh said: “My office is full of portraits of old bishops and I wanted to give young people a chance to paint something beautiful and meaningful that I could hang on the walls as well.”
He said an amazing range of entries had been received and the young people showed real creativity when they responded to the themes.
“I could tell the energy, love and care that was put into all the pictures.
“I’m looking forward to getting the winning entries framed and put up where I can see them every day.”
Evie and Izzy were the Key Stage 1 winners, creating a picture of Jesus ascending into heaven. They used a collage of torn up pieces of paper to make the background and drawing pictures of people looking on and the clouds.
The standard being so high led to two Key Stage 2 winners. Harry’s hope picture based on Jesus’ parable of the lost sheep. And Layla’s painted tree with many different types of birds among the branches.
The Key Stage 3 winner was Autumn who painted a picture of Daniel in the lions’ den to represent faith.
Diocesan Director of Education, Tim Reid, thanked all the schools involved in the competition.
All of the submitted pictures will be displayed over the summer – further details as to where they can be viewed will be available soon.
