A BROMSGROVE Butcher’s is about to compete in the ‘Olympics of the pie world.’

Butcher’s Block has entered three pies into this year’s British Pie Awards, hoping to pick up a gold, silver or bronze and possibly class winner.

The butchers are competing against a record 1,012 pies entered this year.

Judging for the awards will take place in Melton Mowbray, the UK capital of pies, on March 4, with the results being announced at an awards lunch two days later.

The overall winning pie makergets an all-expenses-paid trip to Japan, where they will promote the nation’s food at the British Food Expo in Osaka this October.

Next week, March 2 to March 9, will mark British pie week and celebrates the nation’s most important contribution to world food heritage.

Pies have been around since the Middle Ages, when they were called ‘coffyns’.
