THE TRADES Union Congress has urged employers not to force employees to come into the workplace or punish them for doing so.

In light of heavy snow across the West Midlands, the TUC urged bosses to show common sense and understanding.

A spokesperson for the organisation provided advice for employers to take note of, if their workers needed to work from home.

Among it was not forcing staff members into dangerous journeys and not to threaten loss of pay or forced holiday if travel was unsafe.

The TUC said bosses should enable home working where possible and workplaces should be kept safe and properly heated.

“No job is worth risking workers’ lives for – safety must come first.”

Storm Goretti brought treacherous conditions, including in Birmingham where heavy snow fell from around 8pm last night to 5am this morning.

Trains and bus services were cancelled, flights were grounded at Birmingham International Airport and highways bosses told people to ‘only travel if their journey was absolutely necessary’.
