BROMSGROVE MP Bradley Thomas has called on the government to ‘do the right thing’ and scrap the planned ‘Family Farm Tax.’
Mr Thomas has voted against the new inheritance tax laws, which would impsact more than 75 per cent of farms across the country.
Currently, farmland is exempt from inheritance tax under a policy called ‘Agricultural Property Relief’ (APR).
However, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced she will end that exemption, meaning from April 2026, a 20 per cent tax will apply to agricultural assets over £1 million.
The Chancellor has said this change is necessary to raise cash for public services.
But Mr Thomas claims the tax would be devastating for family farms and pose a serious risk to domestic food security and food prices.
He added the Government’s political choice to target farmers is a cruel blow to the industry and called on Sir Keir Starmer’s administration to ‘do the right thing’ and not implement the Family Farm Tax.
Mr Thomas said: “I joined fellow Conservative MPs to stop the Family Farm and Business Tax and protect hundreds of thousands of farmers, their families and communities like in Bromsgrove and the Villages.
“The Government must u-turn so the 248 farms in my constituency and around the country can continue to produce the food we eat three times a day.
“I am sure people here and across the country will never forgive them if they destroy the farming industry as this tax will ultimately do.”
