Bromsgrove MP Bradley Thomas is urging residents to sign his petition to protect the district’s green belt ahead of him presenting it to Parliament next week.
Mr Thomas launched the petition back in July after the Government increased the number of homes which need to be built in the district by 85 per cent.
It means the district council must now find sites for around 9,000 new homes by 2043.
The MP’s petition demands the Government justifies what he calls a ‘flawed formula’ and reverses the rise.
Mr Thomas has also criticised the government’s decision to reduce Birmingham’s target by 31 per cent, claiming the Second City had at least 140 hectares of brownfield land which could be built on.
At 89 per cent, Bromsgrove district has one of the largest green belt areas in the country and is 79 per cent rural.
The petition currently contains more than 5,600 signatures and anyone who has not signed it has until 5.30pm on Monday, November 24, to add their name.
Mr Thomas will present the petition in the House of Commons on Tuesday. Following the presentation of the petition, the text of the petition is sent to the Government department responsible for the subject matter of the petition. The department will then respond within two months.
Mr Thomas said: “This is the last opportunity for residents to sign my Parliamentary petition to save our greenbelt ahead of me presenting it in the House of Commons later this month.
“Let’s speak loudly with one voice to tell the Government that we do not want our greenbelt built on in the name of a flawed housing figure.
“Instead, the Government must reverse our increase, reverse the reduction in Birmingham’s target, build on brownfield first and, where houses are built, provide communities with the infrastructure they need before any houses are built.”
