Cygnet Song light installation displayed across River Severn

WORCESTERSHIRE County Council’s Public Health team its supporting Cygnet Song, a light installation that will illuminate Worcester’s main bridge across the River Severn this October.

The wellbeing-themed installation, created with local residents, is part of the new Bridges of Light Festival.

The two-day celebration of creativity, community and collaboration will be showcasing installations and interactive light-based artworks throughout Worcester City.

Public Health’s contribution enabled local community groups, including Worcester residents of all ages, to come together in creative workshops and bring the installation to life alongside professional artists, Illuminos.

Inspired by the story of the Ugly Duckling and shaped by residents’ own stories and experiences the installation explores themes of resilience, strength, wellbeing and personal growth.

Significant evidence now shows that taking part in creative activities positively impacts health and wellbeing, brings people together and can help foster a sense of community pride.

Bridges of Light involves artists working collaboratively with our communities to create high-quality artwork with local resonance and relevance.

During the festival, people are invited to take part in the interactive artworks, grab a bite to eat, and enjoy Bridges of Light with family and friends.

Dr Lisa McNally, Worcestershire’s director of Public Health said: “Cygnet Song doesn’t just light up the bridge, it lights up the stories of our communities.

“We know that creativity can have a powerful impact on health and wellbeing, and this project is a beautiful way to bring people together, whether they’re contributing to the artwork or simply enjoying it.”

Elaine Knight, Arts Director, Severn Arts, added: “We are delighted to be working with Illuminos on this new commission. Illuminos have been working with a range of groups from Brickfields and Wardon East, listening to their experiences and creating artwork which will be used within the final projection.

“It’s very exciting to have this projection as part of Bridges of Light and we hope everyone who sees it will go away inspired.”
