Barnt Green Choral Society tunes up for its 75th anniversary

BARNT Green Choral Society is preparing for the future ahead of its 75th anniversary next year, writes Shauna Begley.

The choir has shown impressive growth over recent years and now has nearly 70 members, including 12 new singers this term.

And, continuing its success, it has also been recognised by the Charity Commission as a ‘Charitable Incorporated Organisation’, as well as it being a ‘registered charity’.

A new and modern strong and robust constitution has been introduced and, from the start of next year, further major improvements will be made by consolidating the choral society’s structure.

Chair of trustees, Peter Bould, said: “The new structure will provide a solid framework for both individual singers and the choir as a whole to thrive, grow and most importantly enjoy their music.”

The past 12 months have been particularly busy for the society, as it showcased a moving performance at the annual Waseley Hill Crematorium Memorial service for the bereaved and staging the choir’s annual Spring Concert, featuring Sir John Rutter’s Magnificat and Requiem. The original composer himself sent a message of good luck.

The summer was concluded with a performance of highlights from ‘Mary Poppins the Musical’ and involvement with, alongside Bromsgrove Community Choir, Alexander L’Estrange’s modern cantata ‘AHOY’.

This upcoming season, the choral society will perform ‘The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’ by Karl Jenkins and ‘Song of the Universal’ by Ola Gjeilo on March 28, 2026, at Bromsgrove’s Artrix.

The society said: “In 1951 the founders would never have dreamed that 75 years later the choir would still be going from strength to strength.

“For seven-and-a-half decades the Bromsgrove arts scene has been enhanced by the choir’s splendid renditions of some of the world’s best choral music.”
