A FORMER Redditch Borough Council leader and sitting councillor on the authority has been announced as the Conservatives’ candidate for the Bromsgrove South by-election for Worcestershire County Council.

Matt Dormer, who lives in Redditch and owns the business Dormer Plant Hire in the town, will line-up against his fellow candidates at the poll on October 30.

The by-election was triggered after the resignation of Reform UK’s Gaynor Jean-Louis who held the Bromsgrove South seat after May’s county council election.

Mr Dormer has served on the county council for five years and has been a retained firefighter for 28 years.

Mr Dormer has vowed to protect Bromsgrove’s green belt amidst the Government increasing the district’s housing target by 85 per cent.

He has also said he would endure the A38 BREP scheme kept Bromsgrove moving and delivered on the promises made by Worcestershire County Council.

On the Local Government Reorganisation, Mr Dormer is an advocate of One Worcestershire – a single authority for the whole county.

A fortnight ago, members of Bromsgrove District Council voted in favour of two authorities – one for the north and one for the south.

Mr Dormer said: “I’m honoured to have been selected as the Conservative candidate for the Bromsgrove South by-election.

“Residents have been massively let down by their Reform county councillor and since May they’ve not had the representation they deserve. Residents deserve better.

“I promise to be a strong voice for local residents by fighting to protect our precious greenbelt, ensuring the A38 BREP scheme delivers on the county council’s promises, and ensuring we keep Worcestershire together.

“I have the experience needed to hit the ground running from day one and I would be humbled and honoured if residents placed their trust in me to be their voice on Worcestershire County Council.”

Bromsgrove’s Conservative MP Bradley Thomas MP added: “Matt is an extremely experienced Councillor who knows how to get stuff done.

“The residents of Bromsgrove South deserve a strong local voice – and that’s Matt.

“Born and bred in Worcestershire, Matt understands our rural identity and the challenges facing our town.

“I couldn’t think of anyone better to be the next county councillor for Bromsgrove South.”
