BROMSGROVE MP Bradley Thomas has demanded Worcestershire County Council suspend all non-essential roadworks in Bromsgrove while work continues on the long-running A38 BREP Scheme.
The Conservative MP made his call during a meeting yesterday (31 July) with the County Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for Highways and Transport and the A38 BREP Programme Manager.
The meeting follows months of public frustration over ongoing disruption across the town caused by multiple sets of roadworks.
Mr Thomas said he convened the meeting as part of his continued efforts to hold the County Council to account over a scheme he inherited after being elected.
“I promised to continue to hold Worcestershire County Council to account over their A38 BREP Scheme – and that’s exactly what I’m doing,” Mr Thomas said following the meeting.
Although the County Council confirmed the works remain on budget and are still scheduled for completion next year, Mr Thomas said the disruption is having a significant impact on residents and businesses.
He has previously written to the Council – first in April with six key questions – and again more recently after what he described as “unclear” answers in their June response.
“I’ve been consistent in my view that BREP must deliver both a noticeable improvement in keeping Bromsgrove moving and in reducing the congestion and gridlock that blights the lives of residents and businesses.”
“The County Council has assured me this will be the case. Time will tell.”
While the A38 Bromsgrove Route Enhancement Programme (BREP) is intended to improve key junctions and add new lanes – alongside improved cycling infrastructure – Mr Thomas argues that further roadworks in the area are making the situation worse.
“Whilst this work is continuing, it just makes no sense at all that non-essential roadworks are allowed to take place. It’s just adding to congestion, delays and is further frustrating local residents,” he said.
“That’s why I’m demanding the County Council halts all non-essential roadworks until the A38 BREP Scheme has been completed. It’s common sense.”
The A38 BREP Scheme has been a long-standing source of contention in Bromsgrove, with local residents and commuters frequently voicing concerns about increased travel times and lack of clear communication from the authorities.
