BROMSGROVE’S ‘EDDIE Bus’ which is a lifeline for elderly residents celebrates its 40th anniversary this month.
But, in order to continue serving the community as it has done since 1985, it needs more volunteer drivers to join its ranks.
It all began when it was realised local elderly residents could benefit from transport provision so they could visit places away from their homes.
These included garden centres, places of interest, museums, pubs, restaurants, shopping centres, other towns and villages and the seaside – anywhere they wanted to go.
The group raised funds to purchase and operate the minibus – under the name of ‘Bromsgrove Minibus for the Elderly’.
The scheme has continued since then, still supported by the team of volunteer drivers.
New bus
In 2019, it was felt the minibus – with more than 100,000 miles on the clock – needed to be replaced.
This was made possible by grants from the National Lottery, charitable groups, local council grants and donations from local businesses and users, along with funds from the charity’s reserves.
In January 2020, the new minibus – a Peugeot Boxer with 13 seats (including driver’s) – was unveiled.
It also has an electrically operated side step and a tail lift for loading wheelchairs and those with mobility difficulties.
Some of the back seats can be removed to accommodate up to three static wheelchairs, which are anchored to the floor, and there is storage for collapsible wheelchairs and walking aids.
And it has a Disability Blue Badge to allow for easy drop-off and pick-up. It seemed ‘Bromsgrove Minibus for the Elderly’ had become dated so a new name was devised – ‘The EDDIE Bus’.
New name
As well as standing for ‘Everyday Drivers for the Disabled, Independent and Elderly’, it also recognised many years of dedicated service given by Eddie Mowbray, one of the early drivers who passed away in 2022.
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer driver or groups fitting the criteria who want to use the bus should email Geoff Kearn at: [email protected] or call him on 07805 400180.
Alternatively, email: [email protected] for more on the bus and those wanting to use it pay just £1.15-per-mile hire charge for their journeys.
The minibus can be driven on a normal car licence and full training and support will be given.
