Habitat Heroes volunteers praised for continued efforts at Lickeys

THE LICKEY Hills Society has extended a thank you to a volunteer group for their continued efforts in caring for the popular country park.

The society praised volunteer group, The Habitat Heroes, for sustaining its efforts to support the work of rangers on the hills with necessary repair and maintenance tasks.

Habitat Heroes have recently repaired and secured the doors on the toilet block near the Lickey Hills visitor centre, have mended fences in various locations and cleared habitats including ditches.

The group have also continued their work on heathland at Cofton Hill and have kept up with fallen tree clearing efforts. Seedling fir trees have also been transplanted from Cofton Hill to Gaffers Bank above the pools at the Old Rose and Crown.

Considerable work has also been done around the main pool and the society shared it was ‘particularly pleasing’ to see vegetation surround the boathouse being cleared.

A spokesperson for the Lickey Hills Society said: “Naturally many thanks to the Heroes for the vital work that they continue to do in the Country Park.”

Fears around the groups ability to continue its volunteer efforts have been sparked in recent years due to cuts to Birmingham City Council’s park rangers. A reduction in rangers has put straiin on volunteer groups, who are required to have a ranger present when carrying out activities.

Despite this, the Habitat Heroes continues to meet every Tuesday to keep up its custodian role of the hills.
