FOOTBALL - Alvechurch finish campaign with victory against Lowestoft

TIM Flowers is targeting greater consistency next season after Alvechurch finished the campaign with a 3-2 win against already-relegated Lowestoft Town.

A brace from Kieran Wakefield inspired Church to victory after Shay Willock drew the home side level before the break at Lye Meadow.

The result means Alvechurch finish the Southern League Premier Central season in 13th place, 10 points above the relegation zone.

And Flowers wants his side to become more rugged next season following an inconsistent end to the campaign.

Flowers said: “I can only talk about the time I’ve been here, we’ve been inconsistent.

“We got off to a really good start in terms of points on the board, wins and we started to score some goals.

“We got ourselves from struggling to within striking distance of the play-offs which is the target I set the players from the minute I came in.

“We got to a position to strike and then we fell off a cliff to a certain extent.

“We’re not consistent, rugged or horrible enough to sustain runs of form.

“We’ve got lots of things to think about, we’ve got to consider how we go about it for next year.

“There’ll be evolution over the summer and there has to be, it’s healthy that some new blood will come in and some will leave.

“As a football club we’ve worked really hard to keep our heads above the water and hopefully we can use that positivity to kick on next season.”

Lowestoft broke the deadlock on 33 minutes when Joao Rangel cut in from the left and fired a low effort into the bottom right corner.

However, Church equalised in first-half injury time as Willock outmuscled his marker close to the right touchline before driving into the box and blasting a shot past Ben Self at his near post.

And Alvechurch completed the turnaround on 53 minutes when the ball broke kindly to Wakefield in the box and he coolly placed a shot into the bottom left corner with the goal at his mercy.

However, the visitors drew level virtually straight from the restart after Alvechurch failed to deal with Self’s long kick up the pitch and Joe Duffy took the ball around substitute goalkeeper Dale Eve before finishing into an empty net.

Church reclaimed the lead on 69 minutes when Wakefield controlled Joe Willis’s pass in the box before firing a low shot under the body of Self.

Flowers successfully guided the club to safety after replacing James Fry in the Lye Meadow dugout in November when the club sat just one point above the drop zone.
