THE WINTERFOLD Groove Diggers band took to the stage at the prestigious River Rooms on February 12, writes Aidan Kilcullen.

The band comprised of students from Winterfold School in Chaddesley Corbett cemented themselves in the ranks of celebrated groups and acts who have performed on the renowned Stourbridge stage.

The performance was part of a local youth rock and pop night featuring seven other bands alongside the Groove Diggers, who exuded calm confidence and gave an exciting night for parents and audiences alike.

As well as a series of school concerts as Winterfold’s senior jazz band, the group is set to play the Pen Factory Jazz Club in Liverpool and the King and Castle in Kidderminster.

Groove Diggers’ reputation in the area and beyond has also been secured through invitations to perform at high profile local events from the Mayor of Kidderminster and Chawn Hill Church in Stourbridge.

The band’s impressive history includes performances at the Upton Jazz Festival, Symphony Hall and the Royal Albert Hall in London.

In addition, they have entered the National Youth Music Festival, won the National Jazz Partnership Award and recorded a CD at London’s Metropolis Studios.

Current Winterfold students – along with alumni – also make up half of the County Jazz Orchestra (WYJO).

Groove Diggers’ members and any other musicians from Winterfold and elsewhere will be taking stage in the Dudley Festival of Music, Drama and Dance on March 23 and 24.
