BUDDING politicians who feel they can make a difference in Worcestershire can register their interest in a candidates briefing for prospective councillors ahead of May’s upcoming local elections.

Those who feel they have what it takes to make decisions about the county’s roads, adult social care or looked after children can attend a candidates briefing later this month to learn more.

The briefing, on Microsoft Teams next Wednesday (March 12), will explain how to complete nomination papers and provide information on the campaign period including key dates.

Participants will also have an opportunity to meet electoral services staff, who support the running of elections, as well as the county’s returning officer, Hazel Best.

The Notice of Election will be published on Thursday, March 20 and prospective candidates will have until 4pm on Wednesday, April 2 to get submit nomination papers. The election is scheduled for May 1, 2025.

Prospective candidates can put themselves forward to become a county councillor providing they meet certain criteria and are exempt from disqualifying criteria.

Candidates must be at least 18 year-old on the day of nomination, be a British, EU, Irish Republic or qualifying Commonwealth citizen, and be on the electoral role in the county or have lived, worked or occupied land in Worcestershire for at least 12 months immediately preceding both nomination and election.

Candidates can be disqualified if they are subject to a bankruptcy restrictions order or debt relief restriction order, have a criminal conviction with a prison sentence of three months or more (whether suspended or not within the previous five years), are disqualified under election legislation, or if they work for Worcestershire County Council or hold a politically restricted post with another local authority.
