ALMOST 24,000 more homes and businesses in Worcestershire are set for a broadband boost thanks to new funding.
Worcestershire has secured £41.9 million in funding as part of the government’s Project Gigabit which will propel the county’s high-speed broadband coverage.
This funding will be delivered in partnership with Openreach and is expected to extend gigabit broadband to an additional 23,800 homes and businesses across the county.
The initiative supports Worcestershire County Council’s ambitious target to achieve 90 per cent gigabit broadband coverage by December 2027, aligning with the national goal of total coverage by 2030.
Councillor Adam Kent, Cabinet Member for the Economy at Worcestershire County Council, said:“I’m delighted to see this transformative investment in Worcestershire’s digital infrastructure.
“Our broadband improvement programme has already made a real impact, with more homes and businesses than ever accessing faster, more reliable internet.
“This latest funding means we can go even further.
“Through the combination of private and public investment, we’re future-proofing Worcestershire’s connectivity, keeping us competitive and ensuring our communities can thrive in the digital age.”
The project builds on Worcestershire’s broadband roll-out efforts, with areas like Bromsgrove, Redditch, and Worcester already boasting gigabit coverage rates of 88.2 per cent, 93.28 per cent, and 88.8 per cent respectively—well above the UK average of 85.87 per cent.
Gigabit-capable broadband provides faster, more reliable internet connections.
