Tributes, thanks and sadness as Wychbold Swan Rescue closes after 50 years of saving lives and help

WYCHBOLD Swan Rescue which has been coming to the aid of animals for more than 50 years has announced it is closing its doors.

The owners of the rescue centre, run by Jan Harrigan and John Stewart, posted their announcement on the organisation’s Facebook page, along with a massive thank you to all their volunteers and supporters over the past five decades.

“We couldn’t have done it without you.

“We are really very sorry but please continue to look after our wonderful wildlife.”

Over the years, Wychbold Swan Rescue has come to the aid of thousands of swans, not only across in Worcestershire but the whole of the Midlands. These have included swans trapped in predicaments, from birds covered in oil in canals, injured by gun pellets or caught up in fishing line.

The centre has also helped deal with incidents of avian flu when there have been outbreaks in our areas.

Wychbold Swan Rescue has also used its expertise to offer help and advice to people who have contacted them with swan or bird-related issues.

More than 50 tributes on the Facebook post showed the impact the charity has had over the years with the majority of writers expressing thanks for every single swan rescue carried out while others expressed sadness and showed support for their decision.

Helen Elizabeth said: “Thank you all for every single rescue over the years.”

Sue Fisher added: “Very sorry to read this. You have helped us on many occasions. Thank you so much for all you’ve done over many years. What will we do without you?”

Anne Baker wrote: “Desperately sad and sorry to read you are now closed.

“The loss to the world of swan rescue is immense.

“Thank you very much, Jan and John, for the many years you have given prompt and expert advice and assistance to the Friends who care for the swans of the Stoke Floods Nature Reserve in Coventry.”

And Penny Kitchener said: “Your closure will be such a great loss to our wonderful swans.

“Thank you for everything you’ve done and love and best wishes for the future.”
