TWO ALVECHURCH councillors have completed an inspiring cycling challenge in Thailand to raise funds for Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH), which played a vital role in the life of their granddaughter, Immy.
Rachael and Alan Bailes’ Cycle for a Cause was inspired by Immy who has bravely faced open-heart surgery at the age of four.
In 2019, Immy underwent her first open-heart surgery, a traumatic experience for the entire family.
Thanks to the exceptional care provided by the hospital and its dedicated staff, Immy recovered remarkably well and began school just six weeks later.
However, the family received the heartbreaking news earlier this year that Immy will need to undergo more open-heart surgery.
Rachael said: “Immy is such a brave little girl, full of life and laughter.
“She refers to the BCH as ‘my hospital’ and has built a wonderful bond with the staff.
“We want to do everything we can to support the amazing team in the cardiology surgery unit that has done so much for her and countless other children.”
Rachael and Alan began their challenge on November 8 and covered more than 250 miles over five days.
As well as a physical endeavour, it was also a way to raise much-needed funds for the hospital.
The cash will help enhance the services that helped Immy and provide support to other parents who are anxious and in need of accommodation close to their children during these trying times.
Alan said every mile cycled was dedicated to Immy and all the brave children who relied on the incredible hospital for their care.
“The climate was a significant challenge with temperatures reaching 40 degrees and high humidity, but it’s nothing compared to what these children endure,” he added.
Immy’s story is a testament to the resilience of children and the importance of the care they receive.
The Bailes family is determined to give back to the hospital, ensuring it can continue to provide essential services and support to families facing similar challenges.
