BROMSGROVE RFC edged out Bridgnorth 21-19 in a thriller as the visitors missed a penalty to win the game with the final kick.

Tries from James Gunther and Josh Holt along with 11 points from the boot of Will Tanner helped the Boars to a narrow victory at Finstall Park.

The result means Bromsgrove sit two points behind leaders Syston in the Regional 1 Midlands table.

Following a scoreless opening 23 minutes, a penalty from Tanner eventually broke the deadlock.

However, Bridgnorth scored the game’s first try following a catch and drive at a lineout as the visiting kicker added the extras.

The home side reduced the deficit to a single point on the stroke of half time as Tanner kicked his second penalty of the match.

Another Tanner penalty early in the second half edged Bromsgrove back into the lead only for Bridgnorth to respond with an unconverted try.

However, two tries in the space of four minutes turned the game on its head as Gunther touched down from a pick and go at the breakdown as Tanner converted

And Holt then impressively dove over the line in the corner to give the Boars a crucial nine-point advantage.

The referee awarded Bridgnorth a penalty try with 15 minutes left to play as the visitors closed the gap to just two points.

The Boars looked set to seal the points when Tanner lined up another kick at goal only to see his penalty attempt come back off the post with the clock almost in the red.

Bridgnorth recovered possession and kicked the ball out wide to their winger who won a penalty while the Boars also lost a player to the sin bin.

After kicking the ball to the corner inside the home 22, Bridgnorth won a penalty after the Boars failed to roll away.

However, in a dramatic conclusion, Bridgnorth sent the penalty attempt wide of the posts as the hosts sealed a seventh straight league victory.

Bromsgrove are next in action against Banbury on Saturday, November 30 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Bodicote Park.
