PAUL Smith signed off from his second spell as Bromsgrove Sporting boss with a goalless draw against Leiston.
The club accepted Smith’s resignation before the match with the Rouslers five points from safety in the Southern League Premier Central relegation zone.
Sporting striker Jamie Meddows had a first-half penalty saved as Bromsgrove missed a number of chances at Victory Road although Smith insists Sporting will pick up points if they perform to a similar level in their remaining matches.
Smith said: “Maybe with me going, they’ve put another five or 10 per cent in to send me off on a good one and they’ve done that.
“That’s a level of performance they should try and achieve every week because that’s good enough to win points at this level, it’s just a shame we haven’t put that performance in often enough.
“If they can take this into further performances then they’ll go well, that kind of performance will get points at this level.
“It was a much better performance defensively and offensively, we created four or five very good chances and missed a penalty.
“We deserved more than a point but with the form we’ve been in, especially results wise, it’s a great point, we could have nicked it at the end as well.
“There were lots of encouraging signs, it’s been one of those season’s so far, when we haven’t defended well we’ve managed to score and when we have defended well we’ve been struggling to score.”
The Rouslers spurned a golden chance to take the lead with Ethan Patterson only able to send a free header straight at straight at Leiston goalkeeper Billy Johnson.
Sporting won a penalty for handball on 29 minutes as Johnson dove low to his right-hand side to push Meddows’ spot kick behind for a corner.
Smith’s men went close again shortly before half time as Luke Rowe’s free-kick from 25-yards out clipped the top of the crossbar.
Sporting almost snatched the points deep into injury time only for Reece King’s header from close range to travel wide of the post.
Bromsgrove are next in action against Pershore Town on Tuesday, November 12 in the Worcestershire Senior Cup with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Victoria Ground.
