Champagne flowed as Romsley Scouts celebrated milestone anniversary

A SCOUT group in Bromsgrove has came together to celebrate the milestone anniversary of the opening of its headquarters in 1999.

Members past and present of the 50-year-old Romsley Scout Group joined each other to celebrate 25 years since the organisation nestled in its new home.

The champagne was flowing as over 60 helpers and leaders from the group celebrated the special evening.

“The evening gave us the opportunity to thank everyone who helped and supported us then, as well as all our hard-working volunteers today.” said Andy Shepherd, a leader with the Scout Group.

Plans to replace the Scout Group’s old, dilapidated headquarters started in 1991, with volunteers raising nearly £200,000 to build and equip Romsley Scout Centre ready for the new millennium.

The event included a display of photographs and the original plans for the new headquarters and a brief history of how the Scout Group achieved it.

Everyone enjoyed a hot-dog based buffet, a special celebration cake and a glass of champagne to toast the future of the Scout Group.

Guests on the evening included the Group’s original committee from 25 years ago, that oversaw the fundraising and construction of the building.

Andy Shepherd added: “In 1999 we wanted the best possible facilities to help us work with more children and young people, giving them fun, adventure and life skills.”

“We also wanted to provide a multi-functional centre that could be used by the whole community. 25 years on, the Centre has been an outstanding success.”

The Scout Group is the largest it’s ever been with 90 Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Young Leaders aged from 6 to 18 years-old, meeting every week.

Another 150 people also use the Scout Centre each week, with a variety of activities for all ages from babies to seniors.
