WINSTON’S WISH is encouraging schools and businesses to make a splash for cash with a wear wellies day on February, 29.

The UK’s first children and young people’s bereavement charity is encouraging people to raise money by wearing wellies this leap year.

‘Puddle jumping’ is a term used by bereavement professionals to explain how children often go through grief with the ups and downs of their emotions.

Bereavement support worker Claire said it is as if bereaved children are jumping in and out of puddles of grief by being quiet and withdrawn one day and then noisy and full of fun the next.

Winston’s Wish director of fundraising, Paul Moore said “We often talk about how children ‘puddle jump’ in and out of their grief, that’s where the idea for Wear Wellies Day came from and it’s now a real highlight of our fundraising calendar.

“I’ve taken part in the event myself so I know how much fun it is however it’s also a day that is filled with hope, love and support for those coming to terms with life following bereavement.”

Figures suggest that each day, more than 100 children in the UK lose a parent, not including the loss of siblings, grandparents, friends or another significant individual.
