VOLUNTEERS are being called upon to support the Lickey Hills rangers in their efforts to maintain rare habitats on the land.
The Lickey Hills Society says the rangers are desperately in need of help with the heathland to stop the silver birch trees from taking over and shading out the bilberry and heather.
Heathland is now one of the rarest habitats in the world so the rangers could ‘really use a hand’. The work involves either using the tree poppers to lever the small trees out or cutting them and treating with chemicals if they cannot be removed.
The dates pencilled for in the New Year are January 21, February 17, March 16 – 10.30am-12.30pm.
The rangers have already cleared a large section at the top of Cofton Hills but there is work still to be done.
A spokesperson for the society said: “Any help that you are able to give will be very much appreciated.”
