Sporting players urged to kick on in the new year

ASSISTANT manager Martin Sockett has urged his players to kick on in the second half of the season as Bromgrove Sporting set their sights on securing promotion.

The Rouslers ended 2014 in third position in Midland Football League Division One after a run of five successive wins, including a 6-0 hammering of Studley on Boxing Day.

Sockett said he and manager Paul Smith were delighted by Sporting’s form as they have not tasted defeat in the league since losing 3-2 to Uttoxeter on September 13.

But he insisted there was still a long way to go in the season and he has challenged his players to prove they have what it takes to compete for the title in 2015.

“If you had said to Nick (Smith), Paul (Smith) and myself when we arrived that come the turn of the year we would be third in the league and that we had done well in the FA Vase we would have all snapped your hand off.” Sockett said.

“I think the hard work which everyone on and off the pitch has put in has paid dividends because we have put ourselves in a good position to kick on.

“We know we are only halfway there. We have to emulate what we have done so far in the second half of the season. It’s a big ask, but it is something which we will be driving and pushing to achieve.

“We have got a squad which is more than good enough to compete in the level above, but the only way we are going to get there is by winning games of football and making sure that the hard work which has been put in by everybody so far continues and then we will see where that takes us.”

Sockett said he has also been pleased by how well his side has responded since being knocked out of the FA Vase by Thurnby Nivarna last month.

“It was disappointed to lose to Thurnby because having spoken to some of their backroom staff they even said we deserved to get something out of the game.” he added. “But we have not let that hold us back as we have put together some really good performances.

“The lads are pulling together and you can see that on the pitch as they are scrapping and fighting for each other. The work ethic is something which we have really drilled into them and we will be looking to keep that going.”
