Sporting fear injured Mahon's career could be over

FEARS are growing at Bromsgrove Sporting that influential midfielder Ryan Mahon may never play football again after sustaining a serious knee injury.

Mahon was playing in a Sunday League match when an “innocuous” challenge resulted in him suffering damage to his medial and cruciate knee ligaments.

The Rouslers were hopeful the 30-year-old, who has been key to their promotion push in Midland Football League Division One this season, would return ahead of the 2015/16 campaign.

But speaking to The Standard, manager Paul Smith said they now fear Mahon’s career in football could be over after his scan revealed further problems.

“Ryan’s injury is terrible and there is a chance he will never play again,” Smith said. “He has damaged both of his medial cruciate and ligaments in his knee.

“He’s also dislocated his knee cap and he’s done all of his cartilage in, so it could be a good 12 to 18 months before all the operations are done and he’s on the road to recovery.

“It is a devastating blow for us as a football club and for me as a manager because he was one of the most consistent players this year.

“With him being such a good lad as well I really do feel for him, but unfortunately it is one of those things that can happen in football and it’s just a sad state of affairs that it has happened to him.”
