Rouslers rock Alvis with second half comeback

BROMSGROVE Sporting continued their indifferent home form as they came from behind to beat Alvis Sporting 2-1 at the Victoria Ground on Saturday.

Despite a dominant first half, the Rouslers found themselves a goal down at half time after Aaron Cheshire scored against the run of play.

But the hosts’ persistence eventually paid off in the second half as Chris Conway put his side back on level terms before Sean Brain scored the winner with 12 minutes remaining.

After putting six past Pelsall Villa last week, Paul Smith’s men would have been looking to continue their scoring-spree and they got off to a promising start, with Brain forcing a good save out of Jack Hartopp who tipped his shot over the bar.

But Bromsgrove suffered a set back on the 26th minute when Alvis took the lead with almost their first attack of the match. After Michael Healy forced Jake Bedford to put it out for a corner, the ball was sent into the box and Cheshire headed it home.

Despite the blow, Bromsgrove quickly regained control, but they still could not find the goal their attacking intent deserved as Alvis twice cleared the ball off the line following efforts from Reece Hewitt.

Things did not appear to be going the Rouslers’ way in the second period either as Scott Smith limped off and was substituted by Conway to support Brain up front.

But this ended up being the turning point in the match as the striker did not take long to get his name on the score-sheet. Conway received the ball wide out on the left, took a few strides and then unleashed a perfectly floated shot over both defence and keeper into the top left hand corner.

The 62nd minute equaliser spurred the home side on as Conway almost carved out a second moments later. After dummying two defenders, his inviting cross just failed to find anyone in the goal area to apply the finishing touch.

But the pressure finally told on the 78th minute when Danny Ludlow put a ball in the box which Brain headed into the top of the net.

Despite having four strikers on the pitch, Sporting preferred to defend their lead in the final stages, while the visitors’ cause was not helped when Luke Doughty received a second yellow card for a heavy challenge on Jozsef Jakab late on.
